Kira ist zurück! Zehn Jahre sind seit dem Tod von Musterschüler Light Yagami vergangen. Er versetzte damals als erster Kira die Welt in Angst und Schrecken - doch nun häufen sich erneut mysteriöse Todesfälle rund um den Globus und eine virale Videobotschaft von Light verkündigt die Rückkehr des „Herrschers über Leben und Tod”. Doch nicht nur Kira ist wiederaufgetaucht: Auch Interpol fühlt sich erneut bedroht und schickt einen Privatdetektiv, den Nachfolger von L, nach Japan, um die Kira-Sonderkommission bei ihrer Arbeit zu unterstützen.
